Client Refusing Delay Responsibility After Constant Site Changes

I’m dealing with a frustrating situation on a retail fit out project where the client kept approving last minute modifications during construction. We tried to stay flexible and keep the relationship positive but now they are blaming our team for going over schedule. A friend in the industry mentioned looking into construction claims to recover some of the additional costs but I have never gone through that process before. Has anyone here handled something similar with a difficult client? I would love to know if these cases usually get resolved through negotiation or if they become legal battles most of the time.
