Preparing for the Histotechnologist (HTL) Certification Examination

Messagepar Jennifer Jennifer Martin » 03 sept. 2026, 10:18

For anyone preparing for the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification examination, having a clear understanding of the exam content is an important first step. The ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) HTL examination consists of 100 multiple-choice questions and uses computer adaptive testing. The exam is administered within a 2-hour-and-30-minute testing period.

One thing that stood out to me when reviewing the official content guideline is the importance of staining. Staining represents 30 to 40% of the examination, making it the largest content area. Fixation accounts for 15 to 25%, processing 10 to 20%, embedding/microtomy 15 to 25%, and laboratory operations 10 to 15%.

For preparation, I would recommend studying these areas systematically rather than trying to memorize everything at once. Review tissue fixation and processing first, then spend time on embedding and microtomy. After that, focus heavily on routine and special staining techniques, troubleshooting, quality control, and laboratory operations.

Practice questions can also be useful because they help identify topics that need additional review. I have been using the HTL Practice Test from PracticeTestMaster as an additional preparation resource. It includes practice questions with explanations, timed testing, study mode, and topic-level performance tracking.

If you are preparing for the HTL exam, make sure your study plan follows the current ASCP BOC content guideline rather than relying entirely on older study materials. The official ASCP BOC also provides examination resources and eligibility information for HTL candidates.

For anyone interested, here is the HTL practice resource I have been using:
